Garroorigang is not a museum but a private home rich in Colonial and Victorian history and offers visitors - adults and children alike - a special insight into life in early Australia and Goulburn's past.
Guided tours provide a view of the Homestead's life first as a Teamster's Inn, then as a private boarding school for the "sons of gentlemen" and finally as a classic example of a gentleman's residence in the Victorian era. The home has been lived in by two related families since 1868 and today contains a truly unique collection of historical items and Australiana.
There is much to see - from the original schoolroom containing photos, report cards and other memorabilia of the many sons of pioneering families and of boys who would go on to become significant men in Australian history who passed through its doors - to the cricketing and other memorabilia of the Schoolmaster and his friendship with Dr W.G. Grace and others who toured Australia in the late 19th century.
Of particular interest are the fine rooms of the residence, with their Victorian furniture, furnishings and bric a brac as lived in and added to by family residents over nearly 150 years: the grand drawing and dining rooms; original bedrooms and wall coverings; historic photographs; antique furniture with interesting histories; Australian and colonial artefacts; tapestries; and an unequalled collection of Victorian kitchen and housewares.
The Homestead is set in picturesque gardens featuring many flower beds including roses and old lilacs. Growing on the front of the homestead is a 125 year old rose.
